Harry’s Rules for Homeowners

Many people are intimidated when they are faced with simple repairs in their homes. I still get flustered by some tasks, but I’ve found that if I follow a few simple rules I can get through most jobs.

The rules are pretty simple:

  • Evaluate the size and complexity of the task. Some jobs look harder than they are, and others are deceptively simple.
  • Evaluate your willingness to take on the job. It’s OK if you feel that some jobs are beyond you. That’s why there are professionals who do this kind of work for a living.
  • Understand the tools required.
  • Understand the time commitment required.
  • Know that you might get to do some jobs 2x to get them right.
  • Know that most jobs require at least 2 trips to a home improvement store.
  • Know that you may start a job and realize it is beyond your skillset; that’s OK – this is how we learn.
